I have received many inquiries requesting updates on the negotiations between the ILWU and PMA. With the current labor contract set to expire at then end of this month, importers who are just now getting their products onto water are at greater risk of being affected by labor action.
The ILWU and PMA have been maintaining silence in regards to progress on a new contract. For those who want to try to glean the latest information, they can try accessing the ILWU and PMA’s respective websites:
ILWU: http://www.ilwu.org/
PMA: http://www.pmanet.org/news-info
The Journal of Commerce (JOC) recently published an excellent FAQ on the negotiations.
As of today, we have not seen any slowdowns at the terminals yet. However we can expect to see increasing likelihood of labor slowdowns as the current negotiations drag on.
I will keep everyone updated.
